Are you tired of having to deprive yourself of your favorite foods so you can lose weight?

I have great news for you. You don’t have to do that any longer. I’m Dr. Rita Hancock, author of The Eden Diet, and I’m going to give you two much easier-to-follow (AND MORE FUN) ways to lose weight.

First, make sure you’re PHYSICALLY hungry before you eat. Think about it. If you’re overweight, you probably eat mindlessly at times, or because of emotions like stress or boredom, rather than because of true, physical hunger.

To distinguish TRUE hunger from false hunger, take “The Apple Test.” Imagine the food you crave (like a candy bar, for example) sitting on a plate next to an apple. Would you eat the apple? If not, you’re not physically hungry. When you’re physically hungry you’ll eat anything to stop the hunger. But if you ARE hungry enough for the apple, you can skip the apple and eat a LITTLE candy if that’s what you prefer. There’s nothing wrong with eating a treat occasionally, even while you’re on a reducing diet.

That brings me to my next tip. You must eat smaller portions. HALF portions or less if you want to lose weight. You can’t eat a King Size candy bar each time you’re hungry if you expect to lose weight. Eat half of a single serving candy bar as a treat, and save the other half for later. You can do that occasionally, even on a reducing diet.

The idea is to eat ONLY when you’re PHYSICALLY hungry, and to eat smaller portions. If you do that, you can lose weight the easier way—WITHOUT DEPRIVING YOURSELF OF YOUR FAVORITE FOODS.

Rita knows first hand what it is like to overcome obesity. Being Italian, she had access to the world’s most delicious food when she was growing up. Unfortunately, she ate too much of it. By the time Rita was 17 and was 5′1″ tall, she weighed 207 pounds and wore size 20 jeans. Cornell University to study nutrition, Rita lost 75 pounds. And she did it by including occasional treats in her overall low-calorie diet, and by eating less and exercising more.

Dr. Hancock is a board-certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist with a subspecialty board certification in Pain Management. She has been in full time practice in Norman, Oklahoma for ten years.

The Happy Wednesday Broadcast is dedicated to making a difference in the world as a “Friendly” weekly reminder to empower yourself every Wednesday, by doing such things as an act of kindness or forgiving someone. Now we have added one more thing to the list; consciously do something to celebrate the earth every Wednesday.
